Chimaera

It was as Vega predicted. The fall of the Union heralded a new age of expansion for Ingress. Realizing the inherent value of the minerals locked within the Kepha, the Union organized a splinter company and marched them deep into the range to carve their name into the face of the northern mountains. Before his fall, Vega had warned that unchecked expansion would lead the Union to foolish and increasingly dangerous pursuits, but none could have predicted the fate of the northern company. Their discovery of hesperium, at first, seemed a grand affirmation of the Union’s strategy; an immediate and tangible payoff to an expensive and risky endeavor. The ore was temporarily stored in the only location that hosted a fixed guard, the larder, to be retrieved in six months time by a Union representative. No man knows what befell the original courier, but a military detachment sent to retrieve the hesperium returned, in part, with tales of twisted, unnatural abominations. Brittle, sightless men with horns upon their heads who drove their implements into the rock not for love of industry, but for fear of inactivity.
